Nucleotide excision repair (NER) protects the genome following exposure to diverse types of DNA damage, including UV light and chemotherapeutics. Mutations in mammalian NER genes lead to diseases such as xeroderma pigmentosum, trichothiodystrophy, and Cockayne syndrome.
