Abstract: Transcriptional coactivators occupy an important niche in promoting gene transcription in eukaryotes. They lack the sequence-specific DNA-binding activity that characterizes transcriptional activators, but commonly serve two critical functions: (i) as molecular adaptors bridging promoter- and enhancer-bound activators with the transcription machinery and (ii) as agents that serve to overcome the repressive effects of chromatin [1, 2]. In the latter instance, coactivators either harbor chromatin-modifying or chromatinremodeling activities themselves or recruit others with these activities to produce localized perturbations to chromatin structure and dynamics. The molecular functions of coactivators are diverse and go beyond these well documented roles
